Despite a Demographic Winter, the Italian Toy Industry Finds Joy and Growth in Childhood Nostalgia
According to the latest data from Circana, Italy’s toy market is experiencing a significant surge in 2023, particularly in the pre-school segment, which has emerged as the most lucrative sector in the entire toy industry. This remarkable growth occurs amidst Italy’s demographic decline, illustrating an unwavering demand for toys and games.

Driving the toy market’s expansion are board games, puzzles, and plush toys, contributing to nearly half of the growth witnessed. This trend indicates a growing inclination among adults to invest their leisure time in playful activities, embracing the joys of gaming and puzzle-solving as part of their daily routines.
The Italian toy market continues to see a positive performance across various categories, with animal-themed toys enjoying a 20% increase, accounting for 10% of the overall revenue generated. Similarly, toys based on superheroes, manga, and collectible card games are on a consistent rise, tapping into the evergreen fascination with fantastical narratives and collectibles.

Amidst a diverse price range, the segment priced between 40 to 50 euros is the only one to record a positive trend over 2022, showcasing a modest increase of 0.5%. This indicates a careful consumer spending behavior, where quality and value are prioritized.
Barbie reigns supreme as the leading property in the toy market, followed closely by the Marvel Universe and Pokémon. These brands continue to captivate audiences with their iconic characters and engaging stories, securing their spots at the top of the toy industry in Italy.
The resilience and dynamic growth of Italy’s toy market in 2023 highlight a broader trend of adults reconnecting with childhood pastimes, alongside the timeless appeal of nurturing imagination and creativity through play. As the year progresses, the industry stands as a testament to the enduring power of play, transcending age and demographics in its appeal.
